Public Hearing Reveals Overwhelming Support for Coastal State Creation.

A public hearing in Lagos on the Coastal State bill drew significant attention. Senator Jimoh Ibrahim believes the proposed state will be economically self-sufficient thanks to its abundant natural resources.
A total of 64 out of 109 senators have signed a memorandum of support for the creation of the Coastal State. This overwhelming support from the Senate underscores the growing momentum behind the bill.
Senator Ibrahim emphasized that the proposed state would be self-reliant, leveraging its natural resources to drive growth and development. The Coastal State has $42 billion worth of bitumen and contributes 10% to Nigeria’s oil revenue. This makes it well-positioned to become a major economic player .
The proposed state’s natural resources are a key factor in its potential for economic self-sufficiency. The $42 billion worth of bitumen in the Coastal State would provide a substantial revenue stream, enabling the state to fund its development projects and initiatives.
Senator Ibrahim described the people of the proposed state as peaceful and development-oriented, working towards progress “yesterday, today, and forever.” This characterization highlights the region’s commitment to growth and development, and its potential to become a model for other states in Nigeria.
Senator Ibrahim assured stakeholders that creating the Coastal State won’t disrupt Ondo State’s current arrangements.
He emphasized the region’s expertise in securing the water side, given their proximity to the water, and expressed confidence that the Coastal State would be able to manage its resources effectively.
“The creation of Coastal State is due, as it would not create any burden to the Federal Government. Considering the natural resources in the proposed state, the state would be self-sufficient. Therefore, the creation of the Coastal State would not be a burden to the coffer of the federation.”
The public hearing, attended by dignitaries from six southwest states, showcased the growing momentum behind the creation of the Coastal State. With the bill gaining traction, stakeholders are optimistic about its potential to drive economic growth and development in the region.
