Why Continuity Matters: Sustaining Reform Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

As Nigeria continues to navigate a complex socio-economic and security landscape, the call for continuity in leadership has become increasingly compelling. The administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, anchored on the Renewed Hope Agenda, has initiated a series of bold reforms aimed at repositioning the nation for sustainable growth and long-term stability. While challenges remain, there is growing consensus that the foundation for meaningful progress has been firmly established.

From the outset, President Tinubu’s government signaled its readiness to confront structural inefficiencies that have long hindered Nigeria’s development. The Renewed Hope Agenda is a multi-sectoral framework focused on economic revitalization, infrastructural development, social investment, and governance reforms. These are not cosmetic changes, but deep-rooted reforms designed to secure Nigeria’s future.

Economic decisions taken by the administration—though difficult—reflect a commitment to long-term national interest over short-term political convenience. Analysts have noted that such reforms often require time before their full benefits are realized, emphasizing the importance of policy consistency. As renowned leadership expert John C. Maxwell once stated, “Change is inevitable. Growth is optional.” Nigeria, under the current administration, appears to be choosing growth through deliberate and sometimes tough transitions.

Security remains a top priority for the administration, given the multifaceted threats confronting the nation, including insurgency, banditry, and kidnapping. These challenges, deeply rooted and longstanding, demand sustained and coordinated responses. No nation can prosper without security, and no government can ignore this fundamental responsibility.

The federal government has intensified efforts to strengthen the country’s security framework through increased investment in defense, enhanced intelligence-sharing mechanisms, and improved inter-agency collaboration. There is also a renewed focus on equipping security personnel with modern tools and technology, alongside initiatives aimed at boosting morale within the armed forces. These steps reflect a government that is not only aware of the challenges but actively working to resolve them.

Importantly, the administration recognizes that lasting security goes beyond military action. By addressing socio-economic drivers such as unemployment and poverty, the government is working toward reducing the underlying conditions that often fuel unrest. In the words of former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, “We will not enjoy security without development, we will not enjoy development without security.” This integrated approach continues to shape the government’s response strategy.

Policy experts widely agree that transformational reforms require time, consistency, and stability to deliver measurable outcomes. Abrupt shifts in leadership often disrupt progress, weaken institutions, and delay national development. The Tinubu administration’s early reforms, particularly in economic management and institutional strengthening, are steps that require consolidation rather than interruption.

As American statesman Franklin D. Roosevelt aptly observed, “There are many ways of going forward, but only one way of standing still.” For Nigeria, moving forward depends on maintaining the current trajectory of reform.

Nigeria’s development journey demands patience, resilience, and a commitment to long-term vision. While no administration is without its challenges, the current government has demonstrated a willingness to confront difficult realities and implement necessary changes. The Renewed Hope Agenda has set the tone for transformation; what is required now is continuity to see it through.

Progress has started. To sustain it, continuity is not just an option, it is a necessity.
