Distinguished Senator Prof. Dayo Faduyile, OON, has commended the Federal Government for its dual-mandate policy for teacher training in Federal Colleges of Education (FCEs), describing it as a significant step towards expanding opportunities for students pursuing degrees in education.
Faduyile, who represents Ondo South Senatorial District, said the policy would provide students of Colleges of Education with a more seamless pathway to obtaining degrees in education, thereby reducing the challenges associated with progressing to degree-level qualifications.
The senator made this known in his goodwill remarks at the Chairmen Summit 2026, held on Thursday, October 29, at Ukeje Hall, the headquarters of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), Garki, Abuja.
A former Chairman of the Committee of Chairmen of Governing Councils of Federal Colleges of Education, Faduyile commended the council chairmen for their commitment to strengthening teacher education in Nigeria and translating government policies into meaningful institutional development.
He also acknowledged their collaboration with provosts of the various Federal Colleges of Education, noting the importance of sustained cooperation between governing councils and institutional management in advancing the quality of teacher education.
The senator’s contributions to the development of the Federal Colleges of Education sector were recognised at the summit, where he received an Award of Excellence in appreciation of his contributions during his tenure as Chairman of the Committee of Chairmen of Governing Councils of Federal Colleges of Education.
Faduyile’s record in the sector includes his tenure as Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal College of Education, Kontagora, which was subsequently transformed into a Federal University of Education. Following the institution’s transition, he became its pioneer Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council.
Speaking at the summit, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmed, highlighted the contributions of governing councils to institutional accountability, purposeful leadership and stability in the education sector.
Addressing the theme, “The Nexus of Good Governance, Leadership and Teacher Education in Nigeria,” the minister noted that the Committee of Chairmen of Governing Councils had, over the years, strengthened institutional accountability and promoted effective collaboration between governing councils and management.
She stressed the importance of good governance and purposeful leadership in sustaining institutional stability and improving the delivery of teacher education across the country.
The summit provided a platform for stakeholders in teacher education to examine the relationship between governance, leadership and institutional development, with a focus on strengthening the capacity of Nigeria’s teacher education institutions to meet evolving national needs.
Faduyile’s commendation of the dual-mandate policy and his recognition at the summit underscore his continued engagement with issues relating to teacher education and the development of Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
