Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola: From Lagos Legislature to the Ogun Governorship Race

Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, has spent more than two decades in elective politics, moving from the Lagos State House of Assembly to the House of Representatives and, ultimately, the Senate.

His political journey began in 2003 when he was elected to represent Alimosho Constituency II in the Lagos State House of Assembly. He served for two terms, during which he developed a strong interest in public finance, taxation, accountability and the management of public resources.

Adeola’s professional background in accounting also influenced his approach to public service. Before entering national politics, he worked in accounting and tax consultancy. His legislative interests in Lagos included public revenue, fiscal responsibility and public procurement.

In 2011, he moved to the House of Representatives, representing Alimosho Federal Constituency. He was appointed Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts, a position that placed him at the centre of parliamentary scrutiny of government expenditure and public financial management.

Four years later, Adeola moved to the Senate, where he represented Lagos West. He was re elected in 2019 and later became Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance. His years in the Senate brought him deeper into national conversations around taxation, revenue generation, budgeting and economic policy.

But beyond committee rooms and legislative debates, Adeola’s political career has also been marked by a strong emphasis on constituency development. In Lagos, supporters of his political organisation point to employment opportunities facilitated for young people, large scale youth empowerment programmes and developmental projects spread across communities within his constituency. Roads, schools and other community infrastructure have featured prominently among the projects attributed to his years of representation.

His interventions have also extended to people facing difficult circumstances. Widows, vulnerable families and less privileged members of society have received various forms of assistance through programmes associated with his political organisation. Educational support has equally been part of the picture, including the facilitation of scholarship opportunities for students, with beneficiaries reported in both Lagos and Ogun states.

For his supporters, the scale and consistency of these interventions are central to the Yayi political identity. They argue that his empowerment programmes have touched thousands of people and created opportunities for young people to become economically independent. In their view, his greatest contribution is not limited to physical projects but extends to human capital development and the belief that government and political representation should improve the lives of ordinary people.

The political story took another turn in 2023 when Adeola contested the Ogun West senatorial seat and won. His move from Lagos to Ogun marked a significant transition, bringing him more directly into the political landscape of the state from which he traces his roots.

Since entering Ogun politics, he has maintained a visible presence in his senatorial district, with reported interventions in education, roads, electricity, healthcare and community development. His supporters have also continued to associate him with empowerment and educational initiatives.

At the national level, Adeola currently serves as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, one of the Senate’s most important committees because of its central role in the consideration and oversight of the nation’s annual budget.

Adeola is now the APC candidate for the 2027 Ogun State governorship election. His emergence has brought renewed attention to a political career that began in Lagos and has gradually expanded into national and Ogun State politics.

For the people of Ogun State, his record presents a combination of legislative experience, public finance knowledge, constituency representation and human capital development. The 2027 election will ultimately give the electorate the opportunity to assess that record alongside his plans and vision for the future of the state.

Sunshine media for Yayi.
