Prof. Faduyile Proposes Federal School of Oceanography to Harness Ondo South’s Blue Economy Potential

As part of his broader development blueprint for Ondo South Senatorial District, Prof. Dayo Faduyile has proposed the establishment of a Federal School of Oceanography as a strategic intervention to deepen Nigeria’s understanding and sustainable use of its marine resources.

The proposal was made during a policy dialogue session under The Mandate Arena, an initiative of the Children and Youth Awareness Development Foundation, where the founding president also serves as the initiator of the dialogue platform designed to engage political champions in structured governance conversations.

Speaking during the session, Prof. Faduyile noted that Ondo South, with its extensive coastline and rich marine ecosystem, remains one of the most strategically positioned regions in Nigeria for blue economy development.

He explained that the proposed institution would serve as a specialized center for research, training, and innovation in ocean sciences, coastal management, and marine technology. According to him, such an institution would not only strengthen shoreline protection strategies but also equip young Nigerians with the technical skills needed to unlock opportunities in fisheries, maritime trade, and ocean-based industries.

“Our coastline is one of our greatest assets. We must not only protect it but also study it, understand it, and maximize its economic potential in a sustainable way,” he stated.

He further emphasized that the school would help address pressing environmental challenges such as coastal erosion and sea incursion, particularly in vulnerable communities within Ilaje and Ese-Odo Local Government Areas.

Prof. Faduyile maintained that the initiative aligns with his broader vision for a blue economy-driven Ondo South, where education, innovation, and infrastructure development work together to create jobs and ensure environmental sustainability.

The proposal forms part of his wider legislative agenda aimed at transforming Ondo South into a hub for economic growth, environmental resilience, and human capital development.
