NDDC DISTRIBUTES WALKING AIDS TO PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED PERSONS IN ONDO STATE

 

Akure, Ondo State – February 6, 2025

In a remarkable demonstration of commitment to inclusivity and social welfare, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) yesterday distributed walking aids to physically challenged persons across Ondo State. The event, held at Olubo Hall in Igbokoda, witnessed the distribution of essential mobility support equipment, including wheelchairs and crutches, while hearing aids were provided to persons with auditory impairments.

The distribution event, which commenced at 11 a.m., was attended by several dignitaries, including the Honourable Commissioner representing Ondo State on the Board of NDDC, Hon. Otito Atikase, the Chairman-elect of Ilaje Local Government, Hon. Maurice Oripenaye, and the State Director of NDDC in Ondo State Mr Victor Asonye.

As part of the programme, participants benefited from two insightful lectures. Professor Isaac Olaniyan delivered a leadership lecture, emphasizing the role of inclusivity in governance and community development. Additionally, Dr. Akenyi, a consultant with the NDDC presented a lecture on mental health, where he highlighted the psychological challenges faced by physically challenged individuals and the need for holistic support systems.

Speaking at the event, the President of the Physically Challenged Persons in Ondo State expressed deep appreciation to NDDC for the initiative. He also presented key demands aimed at improving the welfare of persons living with disabilities, which include:

Establishment of an NDDC Vocational Skills Centre
Provision of a Health Insurance Scheme
Increased Employment Opportunities for physically challenged individuals
Award of Medium-Scale Contracts to persons with disabilities
Implementation of NDDC Projects in the four schools for the physically challenged across Ondo State
Responding to these requests, Hon. Otito Atikase reaffirmed NDDC’s commitment to empowering physically challenged persons in the state. He assured that the commission would take necessary steps to address their concerns and announced that scholarship awards would be provided to members of the association. Furthermore, he promised that NDDC would expand the distribution of walking aids to benefit more physically challenged individuals throughout the year.

The event was marked by excitement and gratitude from beneficiaries, who expressed appreciation for the life-changing support provided by NDDC. The successful execution of this initiative clearly indicates the commission’s dedication to ensuring an inclusive society where every individual, regardless of physical ability, has access to opportunities for a better quality of life.
