Senator Ibrahim Opposes Global Tax, Cites Inequality and Poverty Concerns”

Nigerian Senator Jimoh Ibrahim Expresses Reservations on Global Tax Proposal
Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, representing Ondo South Senatorial District, has expressed strong reservations regarding the United Nations’ proposal for a global tax to fund the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
During an address at the inter-parliamentary opening session in New York, Senator Ibrahim emphasized that the international system lacks the requisite authority and framework to enforce such a tax. He cautioned that implementing a global tax would exacerbate existing inequalities and potentially increase poverty, thereby undermining the UN’s efforts to eradicate poverty by 2030.
As an alternative, Senator Ibrahim advocated for environmental polluters to provide compensation to African nations to alleviate their debt burden. He urged African legislators to adopt a decisive stance and demand compensation for climate impacts, enabling them to finance their SDGs.
